The diary of William Carey Bailey : typed transcript, [undated].

Typed copy of a diary (ca. 209 leaves) for 1850-1866, as later transcribed and apparently edited by Bailey at an unspecified date. Introductory paragraph labelled "Chapter 9" by an unknown author gives a biographical sketch of Bailey. The document begins with approximately ten pages that appear to be a mixture of diary transcription and reminiscence, covering Bailey's childhood and his family's overland journey from Illinois to Iowa in 1850, then on to Crescent City, Calif, in 1853-1854. The bulk of the document consists of brief entries describing daily life as a rancher in Smith River, Calif., 1860-1866. Includes some earlier entries covering time spent in San Francisco (1856) and various places along the West Coast in Oregon, Wash., and Northern Calif., where he went from job to job.
